For any ski/snowboard rack do you need to buy a base rack? For instance, if I were to purchase the Big PowderHound, would I need to have a base rack on my car already? Furthermore, are there any ski/snowboard racks that you DONT need a base rack system? Thank you in advance for your help!
Max
Hi Max,
You are correct in that the majority of ski racks will require a base rack system installed first, then the rack accessories (like ski racks) will attach to it. Thule does make a ski rack called the SnowCat (product code 5401 on rackattack.com) which will attach direct to many factory rails, without the need for the crossbars. Either way there needs to be something on the roof first. Please give us a call if you have any other questions or want us to find the best base rack option for you.

Can you do a combination of snowboards and skis on the big powderhound rack?

Will this rack fit my factory racks on my Durango? I measured the usable space on my racks and I have exactly 30". Does these mounting brackets extend past that at all or are they inset slightly?
Thank you.
Hi Marlin,
The distance between the mounting brackets on the Big PowderHound is about 21.5".
Even the larger Fat Cat 6 is only 22.5". So either would work fine on your factory rack.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
