The SplitRail rack itself has been bomb-proof so far. I'm very pleased with the quality. Highlights include how easy it was to put together and install, very little movement when installed (no noise either), super easy to use, and extremely sturdy construction. The only drawback I could see to the rack is the built-in locks aren't overly impressive and definitely wouldn't stop a determined thief, but that's an easy fix with a more sturdy chain if you were worried about it. The locks conveniently placed and easy to use though. Don't hesitate to buy this rack. I would recommend to a friend.

I needed a hitch-mount 4-bike-rack for my growing family. After extensive searching I narrowed it down to: 1) Kuat NV 2.0 (with add-on to equal 4 bikes) 2) RockMounts Split Rail (with 2 add-ons to equal 4 bikes). Here is a sincere / unbiased video I created comparing the two: http://s3.amazonaws.com/sreference/RockyMounts/splitrail.mov I ended up choosing the RockyMounts SplitRail for the following reasons: 1. SplitRail costs significantly less (my deciding factor) 2. RockyMounts has periodic sales (through Rack Attack, etc) 3. SplitRail weighs significantly less (still extremely well built) 4. SplitRail natively supports kids bikes 20"+ and up (Kuat requires a screw-on adapter) 5. SplitRail comes with garage mount (Kuat NV 2.0 does not) 6. SplitRail has a better tilt handle location (my opinion - was easier to use) To be fair, Kuat NV 2.0 has the following advantages: 1. Kuat NV 2.0 has more mature anti-rattle mechanism (both racks work great) 2. Kuat NV 2.0 has (optional) high-glass paint (NV looks better than SplitRail) 3. Kuat NV 2.0 has more adjustable wheel trays to avoid seat/handle collisions Both racks are almost identical in features and either would be a great choice. Check out my above linked video to see more details and why I chose the RockyMounts SplitRail.

Pros: Nice rack: well built and solid. Release lever location is very convenient. Easy to get bikes positioned and secured. Cons: cable locks will only deter an impulse theft. They are very light weight and long enough only to go through the bike fork. However, still convenient and included with locks keyed alike to hitch pin lock. The anti-rattle knob is low enough to scrape the driveway on my RAV4, so I'll be adding a riser adapter to the hitch. The anti-rattle wedge collar did not stay put. I added some spray paint under it to act as a glue and it seems to work. I wonder if a rubber gasket would have fixed it. Another con: in 4 bike configuration it is difficult to reach the release lever, but it can be done. I plan to attach a wire extension to the lever, but this would be a good design improvement to include.
