We were heading from Chicago to LA at the beginning of the year to get away from the cold for a few months. With limited trunk space in my BMW M235i xDrive and our cat in tow, we decided we needed more cargo capacity. We purchased the BMW OEM rack and placed an order for a Thule Canyon XT Cargo Basket through Amazon roughly two weeks before the trip. After our order ended up in purgatory with Amazon unable to provide us an ETA (and time running out), our local Chicago RackAttack came to the rescue. While they had just sold out of the Thule a couple of hours before my arrival, I was fortunate that they had a medium Yakima Offgrid Cargo Basket in stock, which I gladly purchased on the spot. The Offgird is a more expensive basket, but I had also considered it because of it's slightly smaller size, which I felt might fit my M235i and OEM rack a bit better. I was definitely right about that - the car looks great with the Yakima on. The Offgrid is a quality product with solid construction and held up perfectly to the 2,000+ trip. It's large enough to easily accommodate two large duffle bags yet small enough to fit easily into the back of a closet in the apartment we're renting. It also comes with optional accessory bars that hopefully we will be able to take advantage of in the future. I do have to say that the assembly had it's challenging moments - the installation of the fairing and the repositioning of the clamps (necessary to better fit my BMW rails). Once adjusted, however, the clamps work great and make getting the basket on and off a breeze. Overall, we were able to get it all together and on the car in roughly two to three hours. My only gripe is that the basket does not come standard with locks (given its premium price), and I would say that these are a must if you are planning on leaving the basket on the car out in public for any length of time. Unfortunately, the guy who sold me the basket at RackAttack Chicago failed to recommend these to me at the time. Fortunately, I was able to pick up a set at an REI store along the way that had them in stock. These took less than 10 minutes to install and definitely added some peace of mind. Bottom line, I would definitely recommend the Yakima Offgrid if you're looking for some extra cargo capacity.
