Yakima is no new company; they have been making "bomber quality" hardware for 25 years. Their claim to fame is that they are the sole manufacturer of the most durable and functional motor vehicle racks on the market. Yakima promoted round crossbars instead of the traditional square and rectangular ones. There are many advantages to round crossbars, which include the ability to allow for alignment of accessories on sloping roofs, the ability to turn the accessories down and out of the way when not in use, which removes them from the air stream and creates less drag, and the most important is that they are 15% stronger than the alternatives. In 1983, Yakima introduced the first bike wheel tray, which made installation much easier and eliminated the need for holes. Yakima was also the first to introduce a ski mount with a multi-position closer, and are the one and only with the Same Key System (SKS), by which customers can purchase the lock cores for their rack system separately, enabling them to have the same key for all of the locks in the system. Yakima is credited with the first tower with a ball and socket concept, the Q Tower, which fits more roofs than any other. They were also the first to take rollers and put them on top of a multi purpose rack, which made loading kayaks on and off much easier. Yakima is one of the leading manufactures of racks today, and always has been.
